Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name, Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo. and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is a spin-off to Shazam! (2019) and the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

The film was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, It stars Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam / Black Adam, an ancient superhuman who is released from his magic imprisonment by a group of archeologists to free the nation of Kahndaq from the crime syndicate Intergang, whose local leader plans to obtain an ancient relic called the Crown of Sabbac to take control of the nation.

Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan appear in supporting roles. Johnson was attached to Shazam! early in development and confirmed to portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014, but the producers, at Johnson’s urging, later decided to give the character his own film.

Sztykiel was hired in October 2017. Collet-Serra joined in June 2019 with a planned release date of December 2021, but this timeline was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Additional casting took place over the next year, including four members of the Justice Society of America, along with the script being rewritten by Haines and Noshirvani.

Principal photography took place from April to August 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also in Los Angeles, Black Adam had its world premiere in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 21.

Is Black Adam a hit or flop?

Triggering a storm of changes within the DCU, Black Adam opened to disappointing numbers. Warner Bros. Pictures After a long history of steady successes and notable pop culture impact, DC films are facing a major challenge on the heels of Black Adam ‘s box office flop.

Is Black Adam more powerful than Superman?

DC Comics has already confirmed that while Black Adam may not be as strong as Superman, he is still considered far more dangerous. How Long Is Black Adam DC’s Black Adam certainly lives up to his reputation as one of the World’s Mightiest Mortals. As a thorn in the side of the hero Shazam, the villain (and sometimes antihero) usually employs his power in the defense of his native Kahndaq. When that nation is threatened, Black Adam has proved willing to unleash hell on Earth.

His strength and power have led to comparisons with the greatest heroes DC has to offer, including the inevitable debate over what would happen in a Black Adam vs Superman scenario. DC’s 2007 miniseries World War III pitted Black Adam against the DC Universe. Even the Martian Manhunter noted the inhuman resolve of Teth-Adam’s alter ego.

This incredible ferocity was more important than Adam’s physical strength in making him such a formidable threat. Here’s a look at how Black Adam demonstrated that, while he might not be the toughest tyrant in the DC Universe, he’s definitely the most tenacious.

Did Black Adam take 15 years?

After its world premiere on October 3, 2022, in Mexico City, fans finally saw Dwayne Johnson portray the iconic DC Comics character Black Adam, The movie garnered positive reviews, but the film had to wait 15 years due to multiple reschedules. The idea of Black Adam appearing on the big screen started in the early 2000s as the antagonist of the wizard, Shazam.

  • In 2006, Peter Segal signed on to direct Shazam and asked The Rock to play the superhero character.
  • However, Dwayne was also interested in the antihero after learning about him in November 2007.
  • The movie’s development was put on hold in 2009 but resumed in 2014.
  • Rock confirmed he would portray Black Adam in September of that same year.

Due to Dwayne Johnson’s profile, it was also decided that Shazam and Adam would star in separate movies. After Adam Sztykiel finished drafting the script in 2018, Johnson announced that filming would begin by the end of 2019 due to his roles in Jumanji: The Next Level and Red Notice,

  • Black Adam became a priority after Shazam’s success.
  • Dwayne announced again in October 2019 that filming would begin in July 2020, and the scheduled release date was on December 22, 2021.
  • Unfortunately, filming was delayed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • The filming, which was supposed to take place on April 2020, began the following year.

Due to this, the release date has been moved to July 2022. However, this was adjusted once again due to the impact of COVID-19 on the workload of visual effects vendors. The movie was given a final release date of October 21, 2022. How Long Is Black Adam Aside from Dwayne Johnson, stars like Sarah Shahi, Noah Centineo, Pierce Brosnan, and more are also set to appear in the film.

Is Black Adam 2 confirmed?

Black Adam 2 was seemingly in the works following the release of the first movie, but things are looking bleak right now for Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero. Following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-heads of DC Studios, Johnson confirmed that, for now, Black Adam wouldn’t be returning to the DC Universe despite that Superman credit scene teaser, Frank Masi/Warner Bros. // Warner Bros.

Why did Black Adam get Cancelled?

Dwayne Johnson says ‘Black Adam 2’ won’t be part of new phase of DC movies at Warner Bros (L-R) Hiram Garcia and Dwayne Johnson attends the “Black Adam” premiere at Cine Capitol on October 19, 2022 in Madrid, Spain. A “Black Adam” sequel won’t be part of the next phase of DC movies from Warner Bros.

  • Discovery’s studio division, according to the film’s star, Dwayne Johnson.
  • DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters,” Johnson wrote in a tweet.
  • Seven Bucks is Johnson’s production company.
  • The move comes as Warner Bros.

Discovery, under CEO David Zaslav, cuts costs and tries to revamp the debt-laden business. The company’s stock hit a 52-week low Tuesday. “Black Adam” was among the properties that have been disappointing for Warner Bros. Despite its sizable budget,, the movie underperformed at the box office and garnered bad reviews from critics.

The decision follows a leadership transition at DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran of Warner Bros. Discovery DC Comics film and TV unit last month. Gunn, who directed “The Suicide Squad,” and Safran, who produced “Aquaman,” intend to bring new life to the DC Studios slate, leading to an onslaught of different cuts, some of which have brought backlash.

DC unexpectedly nixed “Batgirl,” which would have been released exclusively on HBO Max, sending through Hollywood and prompting backlash from fans. “Love @TheRock & I’m always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can’t wait to collaborate soon,” in response to Johnson’s tweet.

  1. DC also signaled a new direction for the Superman franchise.
  2. Gunn announced that a new Superman movie is in the works, but that the previous star, Henry Cavill,,
  3. A new Wonder Woman movie was also dropped from the studio’s slate.
  4. Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” Gunn tweeted last week.

Why did Black Adam fail?

Back Adam Falls Short at the Box Office – Black Adam was highly touted going in as Johnson played the eponymous ancient superhuman, leading a star-studded cast including former James Bond franchise star Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi and Noah Centineo.

Additionally, the DCU movie featured what turned out to be Henry Cavill’s final Superman appearance, dressing up in the famous blue and red suit for a cameo in the post-credits scene. Though Black Adam made a respectable $393 million worldwide, its budget reached $260 million, not including marketing costs.

Several potential reasons were offered for its flop, with many insiders accusing Johnson of using Black Adam to wield his power and organize a DC takeover. Warner Bros. executives were reportedly about Johnson leaking bad Black Adam profit info and felt uneasy about his growing influence within DC.

Meanwhile, DC Studios were unhappy with Johnson constantly hyping up Cavill’s return, knowing Cavill never had a contract in place confirming his Superman return. Cavill announced last December he was no longer playing Superman after DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced his upcoming Superman: Legacy film would not feature the acclaimed British actor.

Days after Cavill’s announcement, Gunn and Johnson announced Black Adam was out of the new-look DCU, though both men remained open to working together in the future. Currently, the film boasts a mediocre 39% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many unconvinced by Johnson’s performance.

Why did Black Adam say Shazam?

Why do Both Black Adam and Shazam yell Shazam in a fight? – To sum everything up, Black Adam yells shazam because the acronym of the gods that empowered him is identical to the acronym of gods that Shazam is empowered by. Black Adam served as a champion for different factions over the years as his character made a transition from a villain to an antihero.

  • Even though both Shazam and Black Adam started at the same places and were once champions of the same entity, Black Adam eventually decided to follow his own path and turn his back on his destiny.
  • For that, he was stripped of his powers until he eventually found an alternative source of powers, the one leading to Shu, Haru, Amon, Zehuti, Atom, and Mehen.

His powers remained the same; however, this is why even after losing his original powers, he is still incredibly powerful and dangerous.

What is Black Adam weakness?

No Kryptonite, No Chance Against Superman – How Long Is Black Adam Warner Bros. Pictures In all of Superman’s time in the DCEU, the only characters who managed to defeat him where those who used kryptonite. Even General Zod (who could carry millions of tons) was unable to defeat Superman through brawn. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League teased a possible future where Superman succumbed to the Anti-Life Equation, a formula that robs people of their free will.

  1. The “Knightmare” future presented an unhinged tyrannical Superman that all heroes and villains failed to stop.
  2. Ryptonite has been portrayed as Superman’s Achilles’ heel, a weakness when he is nearly invulnerable.
  3. Similarly, Black Adam has a weakness to the mineral known as Eternium.
  4. A single missile made of Eternium proved to be enough to knock Black Adam unconscious for hours.

In Black Adam, the Intergang used Eternium not just in their weapons, but also for their hover cycles. Eternium appears to be more easily found than Kryptonite, which could give Superman an edge over Black Adam. Superman has already died and come back from the dead.

  1. He was resurrected by the Justice League using a Mother Box, and it’s possible some of that energy has amplified Superman’s powers.
  2. When Silas Stone used a Mother Box to save his son, Victor became a powerful cyborg as well as one of the most powerful people on the planet.
  3. Superman was strong enough already, but he has returned stronger than ever.

DC movies have only begun to scratch the surface of what Superman is capable of. In an interview with Jake’s Takes, Johnson even described Superman as “the most powerful and unstoppable force in the entire universe.”

Could Shazam beat Black Adam?

Shazam and Black Adam Comic Book Rivalry – Created by Bill Parker, C.C. Beck, and Jerry Ordway for 1945’s The Marvel Family #1, Black Adam was supposed to be Billy Batson’s twisted counterpart. Just like Billy, the first iteration of Black Adam had the exact same powers: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

  • The name of the heroes and gods spell “S.H.A.Z.A.M.,” which is the keyword Teth-Adam and Billy need to get their powers or give them away.
  • So, we could say both metahumans were equals on the battlefield regarding raw power.
  • However, Billy was a child empowered by the Council of Wizards, while Teth-Adam was a fully grown man trained in every art of combat and with years of experience as the ruthless leader of Kahndaq.

So, of course, Black Adam had a clear advantage, and Billy only won their first fights by tricking Teth-Adam into speaking his magic word and losing this power. Later iterations of Black Adam in the comic books only increased his powers. First of all, they revamped his original abilities to make them mimic Egyptian deities.

  • So, currently, Black Adam has the stamina of Shu, the swiftness of Heru, the strength of Amon, the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aton, and the courage of Mehen.
  • While the change should still make him a Champion of the Wizards like Billy Batson, Black Adam’s new powers give him the advantage in several situations.

For instance, the wisdom of Zehuti allows him to hypnotize people, while the stamina of Stu makes him immortal even without food, water, or air. And since he’s only vulnerable to magic, even Superman cannot do any permanent damage to Black Adam. How Long Is Black Adam Image via Warner Bros. Due to his incredible powers, Black Adam has single-handedly defeated the Justice Society of America, the Justice League, and the Teen Titans. In addition, he fought several DC heroes and proved unbeatable in a fair fight. And even if Shazam usually can count on his family to help him, Teth-Adam has his own allies.

  1. For instance, the movie introduces Adrianna ( Sarah Shahi ) and Amon ( Bodhi Sabongui ), both humans with whom Black Adam shares his powers on some occasions.
  2. In short, Black Adam should be Shazam’s equal, but some of his powers are beyond Billy Batson’s abilities.
  3. Black Adam also has allies that help him overcome entire squads of superheroes.

Then, Black Adam has a lot of combat experience, while Shazam is, in fact, a child. Finally, Shazam has a superhero code to hold him down, while Black Adam doesn’t let useless things like a moral compass stop him. So, Shazam can only beat Black Adam by using his childhood creativity to trick the antihero, forcing him to say the magic word that takes away his powers. How Long Is Black Adam Image via DC Studios

Why wasn t Shazam in Black Adam?

Is Black Adam in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”? – Black Adam got a verbal mention in the 2019 film “Shazam!,” however he does not appear in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” nor is he mentioned. The lack of crossover screen time between the two DC Universe characters is likely because Black Adam and Shazam were originally developed as their own standalone franchises: Johnson’s solo film “Black Adam” was released in 2022, while Levi’s Shazam stars in both “Shazam!” and its newly released sequel.

Is Black Adam in Shazam 2? – While there are some fun, Dwayne Johnson is not among them. That’s right, Johnson does not reprise his role as Black Adam in Shazam 2 with the film failing to feature an appearance from Johnson in any form. In fact, there is not even a mention of Black Adam in the sequel.

It’s honestly disappointing given DC clearly had some plans to build toward the two characters sharing the screen, but that was before recent changes to the DC leadership. Following the release of Black Adam, it was decided DC would not be proceeding with a sequel to the film and that the studio had opted to part ways with Johnson.

It perhaps didn’t help that Johnson was rumored to have been approached about a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and turned it down., Johnson passed on doing a cameo in the film. That’s right, DC apparently extended an invitation to Johnson but he turned down the opportunity to make an appearance.

Can Black Adam age?

Weaknesses –

  • Magical Vulnerability: Only significant magic can affect him.
  • Lightning: Lightning attacks that cause damage and can cause Black Adam to revert back to Theo Adam.
  • A former weakness of Teth-Adam is that he couldn’t revert to normal because if he did, he would age all the years he didn’t, meaning he would die. But after his first defeat, magic made the dust return to his body, which in turn was rejuvenated to the age he was when he gained his powers. This event was redone on the New 52.

Can Black Adam break even?

Despite raking in cash, The Rock’s superhero debut is projected to lose millions at the box office. What went wrong and what can the world learn? How Long Is Black Adam Superhero movies are the biggest thing in the world of entertainment right now, but, it seems there’s never any ceiling on growth. As movie stars, big characters, and popular franchises hit the big screen, expectations will continue to rise. When things fall short of studio profit projections, a box office success can become a failure.

Black Adam is a perfect example. Though you may still be able to find a screening nearby, Black Adam ‘s theatrical run is basically over. It brought in just under $400 million on a reported $200 million budget. The typical fan might consider that a tidy profit, but Warner Bros. disagrees. Turns out, the film needed to bring in at least $600 million to break even.

About a month ago, Black Adam was portrayed as a mild success. Unimpressive, but more beneficial to its creators than negative. Today, as more bad news about the film comes out every day, it’s more accurate to describe it as a failure. Not because everyone hated it, or because no one was interested in the pitch, or even because something else came along and slaughtered it in a fair fight.

  • It’s suffering the miserable death of massively inflated expectations.
  • Warner Bros.
  • Was 100% certain that Dwayne Johnson’s face on the poster guaranteed them a massive profit, so they blew at least double the production budget on marketing costs.
  • The idea of this film bringing in less than half a billion dollars never even occurred to them.

Warner Bros. has made a lot of dodgy decisions over the past few years, but, they’re not alone in this failure. How Long Is Black Adam These days, superhero movies aren’t the guaranteed success they were over the past decade. We’re currently living through a very messy entertainment ecosystem. Companies are betting the farm on rash snap decisions and changing the entire 10-year plan every few weeks.

  1. When a company thinks it has a surefire hit on its hands, they happily put all its chips down and sit back, convinced that things will work out in its favor.
  2. Warner Bros.
  3. Had one of the biggest movie stars in the world and a somewhat marketable DC Comics character, what could possibly go wrong? This kind of thing happens in the video game industry all the time.

Does anyone remember when EA announced that Dead Space needed to sell 5,000,000 copies to keep the franchise alive? Just like WB, they set their expectations too high, and the audience paid the price for not paying them enough money. If studios continue to bet everything on impossible levels of success, nothing will ever be good enough to warrant future investment.

  1. This obsession with massive financial returns, often against the forces of logic, will gradually render every element of franchise media unprofitable.
  2. Just a few decades ago, studios would make their money by raking in a tidy profit on multiple films.
  3. Today, the obsessive and greedy need to grow every year has killed that simple and successful business model.

Making movies costs money, so they want to make fewer films every year. A reasonable profit isn’t enough, so every release needs to be a billion-dollar event. On top of that, they reliably release a few bombs every year, so they need something to cover for their failures.

  • With that in mind, the only way forward for myopic studios is to bet everything on billion-dollar hits.
  • When they fall short, the entire empire risks falling to ruin.
  • In 2022, Warner Bros.
  • Produced and distributed The Batman, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Elvis, League of Super-Pets, Don’t Worry Darling, and Black Adam,

Batman made nearly four times its budget, Fantastic Beasts disappointed on the curve used to grade Harry Potter movies, Elvis, Super-Pets, and Darling were all fairly solid hits, and Black Adam was an aforementioned disappointment. Black Adam alone lost more money than Don’t Worry Darling made in its entire run, but, other than that, the year should’ve been relatively profitable for the company.

Conservatively estimated, factoring in the profit of their major films, WB made around $400 million from their theatrical releases over the past year. It is entirely possible that the studio brought in more money from 2017’s Wonder Woman alone than they did from theatrically released films this year.

Things are getting dire, and only a reasonably proportioned budget can save the day. How Long Is Black Adam The ongoing race to create a single cash cow will only lead to the slow death of the movie studio system. That may well be a good thing, but it will be a painful change for the industry and the audience. If Warner Bros. wants to continue to thrive, they need to make a lot of good films and trust audiences to show up in reasonable numbers.

Is Black Adam at 12 a movie?

Black Adam Age Rating for Kids? – Is Black Adam kid friendly? At a runtime of 2 hours 4 minutes, Black Adam is on the lengthy side for a super hero movie, but not quite as long as Shazam. However, with constant action, with fighting sequences, explosions, chases, CGI and super heroics throughout the film, this is certainly not a “boring” super hero movie as far as kids are concerned. Does Black Adam have an end credit scene? No, Black Adam does not have any post credits scenes. But there is one mid-credit sequence. No need to stay through the end of the credits. Based on my full Black Adam parents guide and mom review above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Black Adam to kids younger than the age of 10-11 years old,

Is Black Adam OK for kids? Based on my full Black Adam parents guide and mom review above, I strongly suggest that parents gauge your child’s temperament to violent scenes (next level to Marvel violence – more like Moon Knight or Doctor Strange 2), and exposure to heavy swear words and bad language.

Considering the full PG-13 rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Black Adam to kids younger than the age of 10-11 years old, I recommend parents to prescreen the new Black Adam film for the intense violence (including gore, human dismemberment, kill shots, etc.) and for the heavy language content.

Is there an end part to Black Adam?

Dwayne Johnson Had a Dream – A lot has happened in the six years since that Instagram post. Dwyane Johnson kept on pushing and pushing and finally got a solo movie greenlit for the DC character he was first hired to play back in 2007. Both a CG mustache and a Netflix character you should toss a coin to forever altered the public’s perception of Cavill.

And now, the mid-credits sequence for Black Adam has paid off that Instagram post from 2016 while also teasing out a future that, just a handful of weeks after Black Adam first hit movie theaters, is already doomed to being eternally outdated. But let’s back up a minute. Before exploring the original implications of this initial sequence and why it’s now no longer relevant to the future of live-action movie adaptations of DC Comics characters, let’s break down what happens in this Black Adam mid-credits sequence.

No, Black Adam does not have an end-credits scene, just one mid-credits sequence.

Will Black Adam wake up?

Black Adam Ending Explained: A Blast From the Past – We get the Black Adam backstory via voiceover. Given the power of Shazam some 5,000 years ago in the city of Kahndaq, Teth-Adam (The Rock) is awakened from his slumber in the modern day when Intergang takes over the country while hunting for this movie’s McGuffin, the Crown of Sabbac,

  1. Archaeologist Adrianna Tomaz (Sarah Shahi) is the first to it, but Intergang jumps her and her brother Karim (Mohammed Amer) and their co-workers.
  2. So, as any sane person would do, Adrianna wakes up Teth-Adam with an incantation.
  3. He slaughters most of Intergang before getting wounded by a missile made of Eternium, which he’s vulnerable to.

When Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) finds out about the whole Intergang-Kahndaq situation, she calls in an assist from the J.S.A. (the Justice Society of Ameria) – Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).

  1. The J.S.A.’s objective? Stop Teth-Adam from going rogue.
  2. Adrianna’s son Amon (Bodhi Sabongui) thinks Teth-Adam should be the hero of Kahndaq basically, and suggests he go by Black Adam because it sounds cooler.
  3. Eventually, Black Adam battles the Justice Society, but when there’s a break in the fighting the team explains that thousands of years ago Adam lost control of his immense power, destroying most of Kahndaq.

So Adrianna and the J.S.A. decided to work to convince Black Adam to be a hero and not a villain. Eventually, however, Black Adam reveals to Hawkman that he was never Kahndaq’s champion, but rather it was his son. In an attempt to save his father, he gave Adam his power but died in the process.

  • That was what led to Black Adam’s attack on the realm all those centuries ago as he took revenge for his son’s death.
  • But now he feels guilty and surrenders to the J.S.A., depowers himself, and is put in an underwater prison to keep him from ever losing control again.
  • But meanwhile, Intergang member Ishmael Gregor (Marwan Kenzari), who had been killed earlier in the film, is resurrected as Sabbac.

He in turn summons a bunch of Kahndaq’s undead as a skeleton army-type situation. So having a fully powered Black Adam to help fight them off would be pretty handy. When the J.S.A. can’t stop Sabbac, Doctor Fate astral-projects to Adam just before he’s killed by the villain.

  • Black Adam then comes to the rescue, with a timely assist from Hawkman wielding the dead Doctor Fate’s helmet.
  • Eventually, Adam straight-up rips Sabbac in half, long ways.
  • Like he grabs his two horns and separates.
  • In the end, Black Adam is cool with the J.S.A now, and they realize sometimes they need someone with a darker edge who can rip a monster in half! The film ends with Black Adam seated on the throne of Kahndaq before also smashing it, saying the city doesn’t need a ruler it needs a protector.

And that’s where we leave him, protecting Kahndaq and staying out of trouble with Amanda Waller. And speaking of Amanda Waller there’s that mid-credits scene.
