How Much Does a Barbell Weigh? (Different Types Explained) › › How Much Does a Barbell Weigh? (Different Types Explained) People, who are new to weightlifting or want to acquire a barbell for their home gym, sometimes ask themselves, “How much does a barbell weigh?” First and foremost, a barbell is a piece of exercise equipment that may be used for weightlifting and other forms of strength training.
- This device consists of a very long metal, usually steel, rod with sleeves for weight plates at both ends.
- It may be used for squatting, deadlifting, bench presses, and many other exercises, making it a very versatile piece of equipment.
- A barbell’s intended purpose and usage might affect the barbell’s weight.
Not every barbell will end up weighing the same. It largely depends on the type of barbell. Usually barbells weigh between 15 and 25 pounds (7-11kg), whereas Olympic barbells, used in competitive weightlifting, weigh 45 pounds (20kg). It is vital to choose a weight that is appropriate for your build and fitness goals.
I’ll be talking about the different kinds of barbells available and their typical weights, as well as guidance on choosing the right one for your needs. How much does a barbell weigh depends on what type of barbell you are talking about and other factors such as the material used, bar diameter, bar length, knurling, and collars.
An Olympic barbell, for instance, typically wights 45 lb (20kg), while a standard one will weigh anywhere from 15-25 lb (7-11kg). There are several types of barbells, and each one is built differently because of their different purposes. These are the most common type of barbell and are often found in commercial gyms. The standard barbell weight is between 15-25 pounds (7-11kg) and are suitable for various exercises, including squats, deadlifts, and bench presses.
- These barbells are used for competitive weightlifting.
- Typically, the Olympic bar weight is 45 pounds (20kg).
- They have rotating sleeves at the ends, allowing smoother and more consistent lifting.
- A powerlifting barbell typically weighs around 45 lbs (20kg).
- Powerlifting barbells are designed to meet the requirements of powerlifting competitions and have specific characteristics to support the three main powerlifting movements: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift.
They are made to be stiffer and have a higher tensile strength than other types of barbells to handle the heavy loads used in powerlifting. A CrossFit barbell weight is between 35 and 44 lbs (16-20kg). CrossFit barbells combine weightlifting, gymnastics, and high-intensity cardio with satisfying the program’s demands.
- CrossFit barbells feature severe knurling, which aids grip.
- This improves barbell control during high-intensity, fast-paced motions.
- CrossFit barbells have greater “whip” (flexibility).
- This lets the bar flex slightly during explosive lifts like the clean and jerk, increasing power and velocity.
- CrossFit barbell sleeves have bearings or bushings.
This makes Olympic-style lifts smoother and decreases bar friction. Durability is also key. CrossFit barbells must be sturdy and resistant to wear and tear to endure the high-intensity, diverse motions of CrossFit exercises. Some CrossFit barbells have even more additional characteristics that set them apart. A hex barbell, also known as a trap bar, or Gerard bar by enthusiasts, typically weigh between 35 and 65 lbs (16-30kg). These barbells are designed for exercises such as deadlifts and shrugs. They have a hexagonal shape, and the weight plates are loaded in the center of the bar rather than at the ends, allowing a more natural lifting position.
These barbells are also known as curved barbells. Curved barbell weight is anywhere between 20 and 40 lbs (9-18kg). It has a unique shape that allows for a more comfortable and natural grip during exercises such as curls and triceps extensions. They are designed to take the pressure off wrists. These barbells have a unique shape with padding and a wider grip to allow for a more comfortable and natural lifting position during squats.
A squat safety barbell typically weighs around 60 to 75 lbs (27-34kg). A women’s barbell weight is typically around 33 lbs (15kg), and it’s designed to be slightly smaller and lighter than a men’s barbell, which usually weighs 45 lbs (21kg) to better suit the average woman’s body size and strength.
- The Swiss barbell, also called the Multi-Grip barbell, is an uncommon piece of weightlifting equipment.
- Swiss barbell weight ranges anywhere from 35 to 55 pounds (16-25kg) on average.
- They are offered in steel as well as a mix of steel and several other materials to choose from.
- The weight of a Swiss barbell may vary significantly based not only on the brand and size that are chosen, but also on the particular construction methods that are utilized throughout the manufacturing process.
They are often regarded as a fantastic alternative for those who are just beginning their weightlifting careers. The size and composition of the log that is utilized to make a log barbell both have an impact on the log’s potential weight. In general, the log barbell weight goes from 50 to 200 pounds (23-91kg). Most often, the short barbell weight is around 35 lbs (16kg). Short barbells are purposely made to be substantially shorter than traditional barbells. Also, the diameter of short barbells tends to be less than that of longer ones. Because of this, shorter barbells are preferred for certain workouts such as CrossFit-style WoDs and MetCons, Power lifts like squats, bench presses, and overhead presses.
- They are also preferred by individuals who have limited space in their homes or gym, because moving around with a 7-foot-long Olympic barbell can be awkward with limited room for movement.
- If you were wondering how much the small barbell weighs, well, now you have the answer.
- They are typically shorter and have a rectangular space in the middle.
They are used for exercises targeting the triceps muscle, such as extensions and close-grip bench presses. They can also be used for activities that target other muscle groups, such as the biceps and forearms. They typically weigh between 20 and 40 pounds (9-18kg) depending on the material used and the length. There is a possibility that the weight of each barbell at this location is unique. In comparison, the weight of a typical average barbell weight may range anywhere from 15 to 25 pounds (7-11kg), depending on the manufacturer. The Olympic barbell standard is 45 pounds (21kg). The weight of the barbell may change depending on how long it is.
When comparing two barbells of the same sort and length, the longer one will have a higher weight than the shorter one. How much does a bar weigh could also change based on the bar’s composition in some instances. Most barbells are made of steel, making them the heaviest option compared to alternatives made of aluminum or composite materials.
The weight of the barbell may also be affected by the diameter of the bar. A barbell of the same length and material that is thinner will weigh less than one that is thicker but of the same size. Knurling refers to the pattern of grooves that are cut into a barbell to improve the user’s grip. Barbells with more knurling will be lighter, as more material has been removed to create that knurling on the bar.
While worth mentioning, the weight difference is so tiny that it might be negligible. Because barbell collars keep weight plates in place, their weight might also play a part in the equation. Some barbell collars are constructed out of metal, which may cause the barbell to seem heavier than it really is.
Material (Steel Type) : Japanese alloy steel Weight : 44lb (20kg) Length : 86” Diameter : 1.1” Shaft Length : 51.5” Knurling : 1.2 mm Diamond knurl Weight Limit : 1500 lb (680kg) Sleeve Length : 15” Finish Type : Black Phosphate
This barbell is one of the most sturdy and robust available for the price you pay; it is constructed from high-quality steel and can support a total of 1500 pounds (680kg), which can cover most exercises depending on why you’re buying it. It’s incredibly versatile.
- One of the most defining features of The Best is its knurling.
- The aggressive and deep knurling provides a secure grip, making it much easier and safer to work with more weights.
- With the 7.75 inches of knurling on each side, you can find the perfect grip length that works for you.
- The barbell has a black oxide coating that gives it a modern look and protects it from rust.
It peels off quickly, and I find this to be its biggest flaw. But this is primarily aesthetics, so if you can look past that, you’ve got a fantastic barbell with various exercises. In addition, the Beast’s dual-snap ring design keeps plates securely in place throughout your workouts.
You can also spin around in circles. The greater the number of plates on it, the better it spins. A couple drops of oil on the sleeves should fix the spin issue. The barbell’s 28.5 mm diameter shaft is designed for Olympic lifting routines. The barbell’s tensile strength of 110,000 PSI is higher than that of most of its competitors.
In addition, most Olympic weight plates should fit on the Beast, making it easy to adjust the heaviness of the machine as needed. This barbell is built to endure and has a one-year warranty to back up its durability claims. This barbell’s worthy of the dedication of professional weightlifters, powerlifters, and beginners alike.
You get a super high quality barbell for the amount you end up paying. The aggressive knurling is super handy for a secure grip. Especially if you’re a beginner. The grooved sleeves will help secure clips to help keep the plates in place securely.
The black phosphate finish is a weak point. It shaves off quite easily.
No, (20kg). Olympic barbells, used for competitive weightlifting, typically weigh 45 pounds (20kg), but other types of barbells can have different weights. Standard barbells, for example, usually weigh between 15-25 pounds (7-11kg), and some barbells can be even lighter or heavier than that, depending on the intended use or specific design.
- The normal weight of an,
- For example, the weight of a standard barbell typically ranges from 15 to 25 pounds (7-11kg).
- However, not all barbells are created equal.
- Some heavy-duty barbells might weigh even more than 45 pounds (20kg), whilst other kinds of barbells, such as hex barbells, ez curl barbells, safety squat barbells, and even cross-training barbells, can weigh less than 45 pounds (20kg).
When comparing barbells to dumbbells of the same size, the barbell will often weigh more. with weight plates attached to one end, whereas barbells are longer and have plates attached to both ends. Barbells are typically longer and, because of that, heavier.
Barbells are designed to be used with two hands, while a dumbbell is intended to be used with one hand. So to answer the above question – barbells are usually (on their own) heavier than dumbbells. But if you are looking at a dumbbell with fixed weights instead of attachable weight plates, it is harder to give a straight answer because the comparison wouldn’t be fair.
That being said, the weight of barbells and dumbbells can vary depending on the equipment type, size, and material. Barbells can typically have adjustable weights by adding or removing weight plates, while dumbbells usually have fixed weights. There are, however, dumbbells that can have adjustable weights by attaching smaller plates to the end.
- Choosing the right weight for your fitness level and goals and the type of exercises you plan to perform with the equipment is crucial.
- In conclusion, the weight of a barbell can vary depending on the type of barbell and its intended use.
- It’s essential to choose the right weight for your fitness level and goals and the type of exercises you plan to perform with the barbell.
Remember that many barbells can be adjusted by adding or removing weight plates, so you can customize the weight to suit your needs. is my recommendation for picking the suitable barbell. A great barbell will give you the most bang for your buck. You will find it gives you excellent results and the most comfort during a workout.
And while what you like is subjective, I’ve tried all kinds of barbell types and brands, and I consider this my top recommendation for anyone starting or advanced in weightlifting. Do you count the weight of the bar?
Yes, you count the bar – Let’s start with the basics. When you tell somebody how much weight you lifted, that includes the total poundage that you had in your hands. The bar is part of that. At most gyms in the US, a typical barbell is seven feet long and weighs either 45 pounds, or 20 kilograms (which works out to 44 pounds).
If the rest of your weight plates are in pounds, go ahead and assume it’s 45. If your gym has multiple sizes of bar, check the end for a label giving the weight, or ask somebody. Olympic style weightlifting is done with a 20 kilogram bar for men, and a shorter, narrower 15 kilogram bar for women. (The main advantage of the women’s bar, if you’re a woman, is that it’s easier to grip.) Your gym might also have smaller training bars—five kilograms is one common weight.
Home exercise equipment sometimes uses a one-inch-wide bar without the wider collars you’ll see on Olympic or powerlifting gear; those bars are lighter, and you should weigh yours or check the package to see what you’ve got. If you’re lifting with a Smith machine, or any other kind of machine, don’t bother trying to figure out how much the machine or its bar weighs.

Is the bar 20 or 25 kg?
07 July 2022 11:00 | News Looking for a barbell but having trouble finding the right one in the barbell jungle? Be calm. Here we have answered the most common questions about bars so you can find the perfect barbell for you or your gym. What weight and length should I have for my barbell? The standard length and standard weight for a barbell is 2.2 m and 20 kg. This is used in powerlifting and weightlifting competitions. In weightlifting, bars of 2.01 m and 15 kg are also used for ladies, such as our 812C bar, What is the function of the bearing in the barbell? The bearing or rotation bearing in the barbell sits between the weight sleeve and the barbell itself and is what causes the weight slee ve to rotate. Depending on which exercises you will do with your barbell, it is good to choose bearings accordingly. Why are different barbells made of different materials? The material controls how much weight you can put on the bar, as the material makes the bar more or less durable. If you compare the different materials, hard chrome is the most durable material, while aluminum is the least durable material. What do the different markings on the bar mean? The different markings show what type of barbell it is. If it is to be used for powerlifting or weightlifting, Some bars have both markings so you can combine the training exercises with the same bar. On a powerlifting bar, the ring marks are 81 cm apart and on a weightlifting bar 91 cm apart. What thickness of grip should I have on my barbell? 29 mm and 28 mm are common thicknesses of the barbell grip, but 25 mm is also a common thickness of e.g. women’s bars, In addition, we have a fat bar which, just as the name suggests, is much thicker. What should be considered when it comes to the knurling on the barbell? Depending on which training exercises you are going to do with the barbell, you need a more or less rough knurling. In powerlifting, you usually want a rougher knurling, while in weightlifting, the opposite is true. What doe s PSI mean when it comes to barbells? PSI literally means “Pounds per Square Inch” and is a way of measuring how much pressure a barbell can take before it becomes permanently deformed. If you want a barbell that will withstand a lot and for a very long time, it is good if you buy a bar with at least 190,000 PSI such as our weightlifting bar. Tips from the master We also sat down with multiple champion in Athletic Fitness and powerlifting Kristian Sewén to find out what his thoughts and tips are when it comes to choosing a barbell. Do all bars weigh 20kg?
Weight Lifting Bars: Men’s, Women’s & Youth – Barbells come in different weights depending on the goals and requirements of the activity,20kg weightlifting bars The reason for this is because end-users find this bar most useful as it can be used for multiple common gym exercises.
- Taking that into consideration, it is the most commonly used bar on the gym floor.
- Despite 20kg being widely used, weightlifting bars can be weighted at three different weights for Olympic competition: 10kg, 15kg and 20kg.
- Some companies cater to all three, but not all do.
- These bars can be hard to distinguish between, but usually they can be identified by different amounts of knurling, length of the bar, thickness of the bar and sometimes by the weights of the bar branded onto the end.
The following are the specifications for each bar:
How do you tell if a bar is 15 or 20 kg?
Barbell lengths & why they might matter to you At Fringe Sport, there are three popular questions we get about :
What is the length collar to collar? What is the loadable length of the sleeve? (We mean the length of the part where you slide plates on) How long is the total length of the collar and sleeve, including the shoulder?
Let’s cover the first question : What is the length between the sleeves, from collar to collar? Here’s our answer, and it’s great news: this isn’t something you have to worry about much. All normal Olympic bars, (20kg & 15kg) including powerlifting bars and bars of that sort, have the exact same distance sleeve to sleeve: 51.5 inches.
- Why do a 20kg and a 15kg standard bar (“men’s” and “women’s” bar) have the same distance sleeve to sleeve, you might ask? This is so that when you rack it on a for squatting, benching, pressing, rack pulls, etc, that both bars will fit cleanly between the uprights.
- Let’s talk about number two : sleeve loadable length.
Unlike the distance sleeve to sleeve for both men’s and women’s bars, this length is going to differ. The 15kg bar has about 12.5 inches of loadable length, and the 20kg bar has about 16.5 inches of loadable length. However, on the other 20kg bar in PK’s garage gym, there’s 16 inches of loadable length.
There’s not a ton of difference between the two 20kg bars, but sometimes, that can differ even more, like when a bar has a wider shoulder between the shaft and the sleeve. Normally, the loadable length comes into play when you’ve got very thick bumpers, a very strong athlete, and they’re deadlifting.
If you’ve got extra thick bumper plates (thicker than normal bumpers) and a super strong, macho athlete, that might cause a problem with their loadable amount of weight. However, the good news is that even with the thickest bumper plates, and the smallest loadable length, you can still load the bar up to above 400lbs,
If you can deadlift less than 400lbs, you don’t really need to worry about the loadable length on your barbell. We totally understand that you don’t want to be limited in gainz by your equipment. That said, all of the 20kg barbells we have right now are not going to pose that problem for you: all of them can be loaded to between 500 and 600lbs, even if you’re just using bumper plates.
Now comes number three : what is the total length of the collar and the sleeve, including the shoulder? The 15kg bar has about 14 inches, and both 20kg bars in the video show about 17.5 inches. This doesn’t vary too much between bars whether 15kg or 20kg.
- This matters most when you’re trying to put a squat rack into a corner, or are trying to work out a bar storage situation.
- Otherwise, this isn’t something to worry about too much.
- Of course, we do get other questions about our barbells.
- If you’ve got more questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by phone, chat, or email.
