A brown tendril and a yellow ground patch are the telltale signs to look for. In particular, when the tendril closest to the fruit begins to turn brown, it is considered to be the best indication of maturity. When it comes to the ground spot (the area where the melon sits on the ground), a bright yellow should be used to highlight it.
